What classes can I take and what equipment will I need?

As a member of Gracie South, you’ll be able to take any and all of the classes we offer: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Submission wrestling (Also known as No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu), and Kickboxing.

Here’s a little bit about each class, as well as what equipment you’ll need to begin:

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial arts and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground-fighting (bringing an opponent to the ground to fight). BJJ evolved from the Japanese martial art Judo, but has grown over almost of century of practice into a distinct fighting art all its own. One of the core principles of BJJ is that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend him or herself against a larger, stronger assailant through the use of leverage, joint-locks and chokeholds. Many people throughout the world have become familiar with BJJ due to its prominence in mixed martial arts competitions. It is considered one of the best and most effective grappling systems on Earth. Live drills and sparring (commonly known as “rolling” in BJJ) play major roles in Gracie South’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu curriculum, readying participants for self-defense and, if desired, competition.

Students will need to have a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi to participate in this class. One may be purchased from Gracie South or the student may supply his or her own. Note: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gis differ from the common “karate” gi in a number of ways, including design and durability of material. It is important that students purchase authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gis.

Fitness Kickboxing

Fitness Kickboxing is a popular training program that is a fun, action-packed workout that combines martial arts, boxing and dance moves. You get a challenging cardiovascular and full body workout as you kick, punch, block and move in each Cardio Kickboxing class.

The techniques used during the one-hour classes, using conventional heavy bags and training pads, are based on authentic kickboxing techniques which provide both resistance training and cardiovascular benefits to its participants. Come try one of the most popular fitness trends and kick, jab, cross, hook, and uppercut your way to a fitter you!

Submission Wrestling

Submission wrestling (also known as submission fighting, submission grappling and No-Gi Jiu Jitsu) focuses the use of clinch and ground-fighting techniques to control and ultimately defeat an opponent through joint-locks, chokes and other submission holds. Like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, submission wrestling has enjoyed great exposure through MMA competitions, where it is considered an integral part of any fighter’s arsenal.

Submission wrestling students are required to wear athletic or fighting shorts and t-shirts and/or rash guards. It is important than neither shirts nor shorts have buttons or other metal protrusions as they will damage the mat during training.
