Meet Patrick Lucas, a Gracie South Student in Jackson.
WHEN DID YOU START JIU JITSU?
I started training at Gracie South about 2 and a half years ago. Though I’ve only really been training consistently for about a year and a half.
WHY DID YOU START JIU JITSU?
I needed to spend my time doing something constructive other than just work and school. I’ve always wanted to do something like Jiu Jitsu, it just wasn’t until recently that I finally had the time and resources to do so.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SUBMISSION?
Usually it’s whatever I can get the person to tap to. If I had to pick the submission I’m the most effective at getting, it’d probably be the triangle.
WHAT’S YOUR LEAST FAVORITE POSITION TO BE IN?
While I’m definitely a lot more comfortable being in a vulnerable position than when I first started; I still have quite a bit of trouble escaping from the rear mount.
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF OUTSIDE THE ACADEMY.
I currently live in Pearl. I’ve been living here since I graduated Terry High School in 2012. I currently attend Hinds Community College, where I’m studying Network Security Technology. I hope to graduate in the next year or so. When I’m not doing something for school or training at the gym, I usually be at the Kroger in Pearl, where I’ve been working for the last 3 years.
TELL US SOMETHING WE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU.
To be honest, I don’t have any special talents. Other than what I’ve already told you. I guess what surprises most people when they first meet me is how young I look compared to my actual age. Most people seem to think I’m 18 or 19 years old, when I’m actually 23. Not sure if that really answers the question. Best I could come up with.
HAS JIU JITSU AFFECTED YOUR LIFE OUTSIDE THE GYM?
I feel like Jiu Jitsu has greatly affected my life in many ways. Other than giving me the chance to meet a ton of great people, I feel like doing Jiu Jitsu has helped me feel more comfortable working with other people. And while it wasn’t my original intention, I’ve lost quite a bit of weight since I started training. I could probably go on for several more paragraphs about how Jiu-Jitsu has improved my life, but those are probably the two major improvements I’ve noticed since I started.
